Every Story Has the Power to Help Someone Else
Service • Sentence • Service (SsS) is V-Aid’s programme that gives veterans with experience of the criminal justice system an opportunity to share their stories, reflections and creativity to help others facing similar challenges.
Whether through personal experiences, letters, poetry or artwork, every contribution has the potential to encourage, inspire and remind someone that they are not alone.
By giving people a voice, SsS creates opportunities for lived experience to become a source of hope, understanding and positive change.
Why Every Voice Matters
Many veterans carry experiences that are difficult to talk about. Some have faced challenges during or after military service that have led them into the criminal justice system. Too often, those experiences remain unheard.
Service • Sentence • Service believes every story has value. By sharing lived experiences, contributors can help others recognise they are not alone, offer hope to those facing similar struggles and encourage people to make positive choices for the future.
Sometimes the most powerful advice comes not from professionals, but from someone who has walked the same path.
Sharing Stories That Matter
SsS welcomes a range of creative contributions from veterans with experience of the criminal justice system.
Contributors can choose to share:
- Personal stories and life experiences
- Letters and reflections
- Poetry
- Artwork
Every contribution is treated with respect and can be submitted under the contributor’s own name or anonymously, allowing individuals to decide how their story is shared.
The aim is not to judge the past, but to help shape a better future through honesty, reflection and lived experience.
More Than Words
Writing can be a powerful way to reflect, rebuild confidence and make sense of life’s experiences.
For some contributors, sharing a story may be the first time they have spoken openly about their journey. For others, it is an opportunity to encourage someone who may be facing similar challenges today.
Every article, poem, letter or piece of artwork becomes more than a contribution—it becomes a way of helping another veteran realise that change is possible and that no one has to face life’s challenges alone.
By turning personal experiences into messages of hope, Service • Sentence • Service helps ensure that every voice has the opportunity to make a positive difference.
Stories That Inspire Hope
Every contribution received through Service • Sentence • Service has the potential to encourage, support and inspire someone else.
Whether a story offers reassurance, a poem captures emotions that are difficult to express, or artwork communicates what words cannot, each contribution helps build a growing collection of lived experiences that others can learn from.
Together, these voices remind us that while everyone’s journey is different, hope, resilience and the opportunity to rebuild are always possible.
